Damage Prevention

Pipeline marker

Digging without calling to have underground utilities located first is dangerous, and in most cases, it’s illegal. Protect yourself and your community by making a free call to 811 at least 2-3 business days prior to any excavation project.

Always dig with CARE:

  • Call 811 Before You Dig
  • Allow required time for markings
  • Respect the marks
  • Excavate carefully

811 is the free, FCC-designated national one-call number that connects a caller from anywhere in the country to the appropriate local one-call center.

Anyone who is conducting soil-disturbing activities should use 811. Whether you’re a professional excavator, a contractor conducting a full-scale excavation project or a homeowner doing a project in your own yard, 811 applies to you. You will not be charged for this service.

Calling 811 is essential every time you are doing an excavation project, even if you’ve previously had underground utilities located in the area. Never rely on pipeline markers as a reference for the exact location of the pipeline. The call must be placed 2-3 business days before you plan to start your project. Visit call811.com for the specifics in your state.
